Lehesten is a marvellous, friendly little mountain town in the heart of Thuringia with approx.. 2000 inhabitants.Located in the southeast part of the Thuringian forest, the city is well-known the far beyond Thuringian borders by the slate mining industry. Since the 13th century the slate mine industry is active in the environment of Lehestens. Regional moving ways as well as the proximity to the “Rennsteig”  make possible the connection to supraregional connections. Wonderful views are offered again and again on the surrounding landscape.

Since the beginning of  slate mining our town is strongly obliged to the slate mine industry.                         In 1792 Alexander of Humboldt drove on the slate mines around Lehesten and were concerned with geological studies.                                              This slate, the so called  "Blue gold" was reason, why Lehesten is well known in Germany and in the whole world too.

Rarely an industry in such a way coined/shaped the landscape and humans like the slate production and processing in the area of Lehesten. It becomes the largest  day-build slate mines of  continent.

Visitors of  Lehesten should not miss to regard the largest slate board of the world, shown in the town church.  In this church Martin Luther prevent a   lecture in the year 1530.
